These lawsuits argue that the laws compel Catholic healthcare providers to violate their conscience by participating in or promoting assisted suicide, which the Church opposes as contrary to its mission and moral teachings.

Dovie, a disabled man with nemaline myopathy, passionately opposed New York's new assisted suicide bill and shared his experience of nearly dying when his ventilator hose became disconnected. On May 18, 2025, after a similar incident where help was delayed, Dovie fell into a coma and died 16 months later at the age of 35. Dovie's article against assisted suicide was published by UnHerd and reprinted in The Free Press, and he sought to provide instructions for ventilator emergencies to help others before his death on September 11, 2026.

Adding insult to injury, the law requires morally or religiously objecting doctors to be complicit in assisted suicides by cooperating with some of its provisions.
